Urethane tires with “No Cord” are more difficult to install often requiring an installation tool. Shop for one here.
Read these instructions thoroughly before starting. Please note that New Solutions will only accept returns of undamaged / uninstalled tires, and undamaged unused installation tools.
- BEFORE STARTING, PLEASE ENSURE YOUR VISE AND WORK BENCH ARE SECURELY FASTENED AND DO NOT MOVE. ANY MOVEMENT NEGATES THE FORCE YOU WILL BE PUTTING ON THE TIRE.
- For a 24” (540 mm) wheel with a valve stem hole, install the 7/16” peg in the last 7/16” hole and the 5/8” peg in the second hole on the opposite end (you want the 5/8” peg as close to the wheel as possible). For 25” and 26” wheels (559 mm and 590 mm), and 24” wheels without a valve stem hole, use the last 5/8” hole.
- For 20” and 22” wheels, move the 7/16” peg to the second or third hole and adjust the 5/8” peg accordingly so that peg is as close to the wheel as possible.
- Secure the base of the tool in a securely mounted bench vise so the pegs are pointing up and the square tubing of the tool is within the claws of the vise. If the vice has smaller claws, they should be closer to the axle peg. The tool should also be level.
- Place the wheel with the hand-rim facing down over the 7/16” peg. You may need to use some spacers (not included) on the peg to keep the hand-rim from getting scratched. If your hand-rim is removable from the outside of the rim, it might be advisable to avoid damage.
- Seat the solid wheelchair tire on the rim at the starting point using zip ties (not included), and wrap the tire around the 5/8” peg (so that the tire is on the outside of the peg)
- Using both hands, slowly rotate the tire and wheel clockwise to stretch the tire and guide it onto the wheel. Turn the wheel holding the rim, not the spokes to avoid damage.
- As the tire seats around the rim, it will start to ride up as the slack becomes less. Keep in mind great force is required to continue turning. You can spray some diluted dishwashing soap on the uninstalled portion of the tire to help reduce the friction. (DO NOT USE ANY PETROLEUM BASED LUBRICANTS)
- Once the tire is all the way around the rim, remove the zip ties and continue turning the wheel to make sure the tire is fully seated. Some tires are wider than the channel or the groove and thin out to fit while turning.
- Once you are sure the tire is on the rim correctly, using both hands tap up (one hand on each side from the underside of the wheel) to release the wheel from the tool. In most cases you will need to tap up several times to free it from the 5/8” peg.
- nspect both sides of the tire to make sure it is correctly seated all the way around.
Tool Notes:
- The 7/16” peg is used for 7/16”, 1/2” and 12 mm inner diameter bearings.
- The 5/8” peg is used for stretching since it will not bend and is large enough to cover any spaces on the underside of the tire (depending on the tire)
- Zip ties are useful as an extra pair of hands at the start to hold the tire
- The hole in the middle of the tool is not used
- The bench vise must be securely mounted to a solid work surface (such as a work bench).
- Your solid surface or work bench must also be secured to the floor or wall so it will not move
